Motion

Our assignment this week was to show motion. We were given the option of showing motion in the most affective way, either by stopping motion completely or using slow shutter speeds to really let movement sink in. I went to a few different events this week in hopes of catching a standout image from one of the many sporting events on campus. I shot photos at Western's big win of Central on Feb. 16 and I also took photos at the men's senior night on Tuesday Feb. 22. I finally decided to go with this shot of Western Washington rugby full-back Colin Moy. These are just a few of the many photos I came up with over the past week.

Colin Moy, 22, looks for a pass in a men’s rugby match on Feb. 19, 2011.  The Western Washington Warthogs lost to Oregon State University 14-22 in a tough fought Division I NCRP men’s rugby match Saturday. The Warthogs are 0-3 in the 2011 season after moving into Division I play for the first time. “I think we are having problems executing what we need to execute,” Moy said. “If we execute better we will have a lot more success on the field.” Moy, a WWU senior, has been playing rugby for three years starting as a full-back and winger. Moy enjoys playing rugby because of teamwork and the great physical and mental demands it has on each player. “The tightness of the team, everyone working together, is what helps us win,” Moy said.  More information about WWU men’s rugby can be found online at Western Rugby and also on Facebook

February 8, 2011

Henry “Scribes” Kleaveland, 23, stands on stage at the Wild Buffalo in downtown Bellingham on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Scribes, a Hiphop artist from Seattle, WA, has been rapping and performing around the Northwest for the last 10 years and recently released “What Was Lost,” a full length album on February 4, 2011.

“I have known I was able to write for a long time,” says Scribes, “ but I didn’t start to take rapping seriously until about sophomore year of high school. School became second to rap,” Scribes said, “I woke up everyday to rap.”
Scribes has many musical influences including rappers Nas, Eminem, Immortal Technique, and Notorious B.I.G., but most closely identifies with Tupac. “I am more of a collage of my influences,” Scribes said, “once you begin to develop your own style, you have to become an evolution of your influences.”
Scribes who daylights as a housing assistant manager for a small non-profit business on Capitol Hill in Seattle, also spends time as a boxing instructor a couple of hours a week.
Tuesday was Scribes third time performing in Bellingham. Previously he performed at a house party and also opened for Zion I, a well-known rap duo from Oakland, CA, at the Nightlight.

Environmental Portrait

The goal of this week's assignment was to photograph someone in their element. The picture I turned in this week was not one of my favorites although it did fulfill the requirements for the assignment and in the end it could have functioned for some kind of news related story. I found that shooting with the light inside has very different effects on the photograph compared with shooting in  gentle tones of daylight. This became very prominent when I tried to take photos in the yellow light of Carver Gym. Each week brings a new challenge and all I can hope for is improvement in the following weeks.

Next week: Genuine Emotion/ Relationship

Griffin Day, 21, sits in the Western Washington Athletics intern office in Carver Gym on Feb. 3 2011. Day is the Viking Game-Day Coordinating Intern and is one of seven interns working for the Western Washington Athletics department.  “I love sports,” said Day, “this has been a great way for me to stay involved in the school and also gain work experience for after school.” Day is responsible for organizing promotional plans for home events, coordinating half-time events and working with the Western’s fan club the Blue Crew. More information about Western Washington Athletics can be found on Western's Athletics page at WWU Vikings
