Henry “Scribes” Kleaveland, 23, stands on stage at the Wild Buffalo in downtown Bellingham on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Scribes, a Hiphop artist from Seattle, WA, has been rapping and performing around the Northwest for the last 10 years and recently released “What Was Lost,” a full length album on February 4, 2011.
“I have known I was able to write for a long time,” says Scribes, “ but I didn’t start to take rapping seriously until about sophomore year of high school. School became second to rap,” Scribes said, “I woke up everyday to rap.”
Scribes has many musical influences including rappers Nas, Eminem, Immortal Technique, and Notorious B.I.G., but most closely identifies with Tupac. “I am more of a collage of my influences,” Scribes said, “once you begin to develop your own style, you have to become an evolution of your influences.”
Scribes who daylights as a housing assistant manager for a small non-profit business on Capitol Hill in Seattle, also spends time as a boxing instructor a couple of hours a week.
Tuesday was Scribes third time performing in Bellingham. Previously he performed at a house party and also opened for Zion I, a well-known rap duo from Oakland, CA, at the Nightlight.
